How to Power a Car Fridge While Camping

A camping car fridge can be powered from a suitable 12V or 24V DC supply while travelling, from an auxiliary battery or portable power station while parked, or from 240V mains through the correct adaptor where mains power is available. These power sources solve different problems, so the right setup depends on whether the vehicle is moving, how long you will be parked and whether you have access to mains power.

Do not plan an overnight runtime from the fridge’s watt rating alone. Battery capacity, usable depth of discharge, ambient temperature, temperature setting, cycling behaviour and how often the fridge is opened all change the result.

Important: low-voltage protection can stop a fridge when voltage falls below a selected threshold, but it does not guarantee that a vehicle starting battery will always have enough charge left to restart the engine.

12V, 24V and 240V: what is each for?

Supply Typical role What to confirm
12V DC Common passenger vehicle and portable-battery use. Outlet rating, connector, cable, ignition behaviour and fridge input requirements.
24V DC Common in some trucks and specialist vehicle systems. That the exact fridge supports 24V and the circuit is suitable.
240V AC Home, powered campsite or other Australian mains supply through the correct adaptor. Exact adaptor input, lead and model instructions.

The four current priority AutoSquad models checked for this guide all list 12/24V DC vehicle operation plus AC mains operation through their supplied power equipment. The 25L and Eisberge 45L list AC 220–240V; the 35L and 43L dual-zone models list AC 100–240V.

Vehicle starting battery vs auxiliary battery vs portable power station

Vehicle starting battery

A starting battery is designed primarily to start the engine. It can power a fridge while driving when the vehicle circuit is suitable, but long parked operation risks leaving too little charge to restart the vehicle. Do not assume a low-voltage cut-off makes unlimited parked use safe.

Auxiliary battery

An auxiliary battery separates camping loads from the starting battery when the system is designed correctly. It is the usual direction to consider for regular 4WD or touring use where the fridge must operate for longer periods away from mains power. Battery chemistry, capacity, charging method, cabling, fusing and installation must suit the complete system.

Portable power station

A portable power station can provide a self-contained supply for a fridge at camp. Check the usable battery capacity, 12V/DC output capability, connector, output limit and charging method. Do not assume every power station’s “car socket” is appropriate for every fridge.

The 25L model lists 12/24V DC operation and 220–240V AC operation through supplied power equipment.

Can I run a car fridge overnight?

Yes, if the fridge has a suitable power source and the system has enough usable energy for the actual conditions. What cannot be stated responsibly is a universal number of hours.

An overnight plan needs at least two verified inputs: the fridge’s real energy use under relevant conditions and the usable capacity of the battery or power station. A rated input such as 45W or 60W is not the same as a measured 24-hour average because compressor fridges cycle.

For longer parked stops, use an appropriately designed auxiliary supply or portable power station rather than deliberately deep-discharging the vehicle starting battery.

A simple camping power plan

  1. While driving: use the vehicle supply only if the exact outlet and circuit suit the fridge.
  2. When parked briefly: understand whether the outlet stays live with the ignition off and avoid relying on the starting battery for an unknown duration.
  3. When parked for longer: use a correctly designed auxiliary battery or suitable portable power station.
  4. At a powered site or home: use the approved mains adaptor and lead for the exact model.

FAQs

Will a 12V car fridge flatten my battery?

It can if it is left on a starting battery long enough. Low-voltage protection reduces risk but does not guarantee restart capacity. Use an appropriate auxiliary supply for longer parked use.

Can I plug a car fridge into 240V at home?

Yes when the exact model supports mains operation through the correct adaptor. The current priority AutoSquad models listed above include mains power equipment.

Can I use a portable power station?

Potentially, yes. Confirm the fridge input, power-station output, connector, output limit and usable battery capacity before relying on it.

How long will a battery run a camping fridge?

There is no reliable universal answer. It requires verified consumption under the intended conditions and verified usable battery capacity.
