Car wheel dollies help you reposition a compatible vehicle inside a garage without needing the turning space of normal driving. Choosing a set means checking more than the headline load rating: the load on each wheel, tyre fit, floor condition and loading method all matter.

What are car wheel dollies used for?
A wheel dolly sits beneath a vehicle tyre and rolls on castors. Suitable sets can help with short-distance positioning in a workshop, showroom or storage area, particularly where space beside a parked car is limited. The equipment and vehicle must be compatible, and the floor must meet the product instructions.
This guide covers garage positioning equipment, not road-towing dollies, wheel-alignment turnplates or equipment for handling a detached truck wheel. Browse the car wheel dollies collection to compare the available platform sets and vehicle positioning jacks.
Platform vs hydraulic wheel dollies
| Check | Platform dollies | Hydraulic dollies |
|---|---|---|
| Loading | A separate suitable lifting method is needed to place the tyre on the platform. | An integrated hydraulic mechanism raises the supported tyre on compatible models. |
| Fit checks | Usable tyre-support area, wheel load and clearance for loading. | Supported tyre width and diameter, roller travel and wheel load. |
| Inspection | Platform, fasteners and castors. | Frame, rollers, castors, hydraulic system and any specified lock. |
Choose by the complete task, not the product name alone. A listing described as a “vehicle positioning jack” may have a different loading mechanism from a fixed platform dolly. Confirm how the exact model lifts, holds and lowers its load.

How much weight can a four-piece set carry?
Read the rating per dolly as well as the combined rating. The 1820kg Car Wheel Dolly Set – 4 Piece is listed at 455kg per dolly and 1,820kg combined across four dollies. The combined figure does not mean that each dolly can carry 1,820kg.
A vehicle does not necessarily distribute its weight equally between four wheels. Dividing the total weight by four is therefore not enough to confirm compatibility. Check the loaded vehicle weight and the actual load at each wheel against the individual rating. If you cannot establish suitable wheel loads, ask a qualified workshop before selecting equipment.
Seven checks before buying wheel dollies
- Individual wheel load: verify the load each dolly will carry, including items remaining in the vehicle.
- Tyre compatibility: check the allowed tyre width, diameter and contact area. Overall platform dimensions are not automatically the maximum supported tyre dimensions.
- Loading clearance: confirm there is room to position the equipment and use the vehicle manufacturer's approved lifting points where a separate jack is needed.
- Floor: use a hard, smooth, level surface. Slopes, gravel, broken concrete and thresholds are unsuitable for the featured set.
- Castors and floor finish: inspect their condition and confirm suitability for the surface. Do not assume every castor is non-marking.
- Control and locking: check the exact model's instructions and any locking features; never infer a brake from a photograph.
- Set quantity and storage: confirm how many individual dollies are included and whether the approved configuration suits the movement you need.
A platform option: AutoSquad TL1210x2
The TL1210x2 set contains four steel platform dollies, each with four cast-iron swivel castors. The published overall dimensions per dolly are 605 × 390 × 140mm. These dimensions describe the equipment; they do not establish a maximum tyre width.
This is an option to consider for compatible vehicles where you already have an appropriate lifting arrangement and a clear, level garage floor. It is not a self-loading hydraulic set. Check the TL1210x2 specifications and current availability before ordering. If you need a different capacity or loading method, compare alternatives in the collection rather than exceeding this model's limits.
Positioning is different from under-car servicing
Wheel dollies are intended to help position a vehicle. Do not work beneath a vehicle supported on these dollies, and do not use them for road towing. Keep the travel area clear and follow the equipment instructions; if the vehicle does not move as expected, stop rather than forcing it.
For a separate lifting task, the ACCC's vehicle jacks safety guide explains why a jack alone is not safe support for working underneath a vehicle. For the differences between maintenance support options, read our car ramps vs jack stands buying guide. Always follow the vehicle and equipment manufacturers' instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Do platform car wheel dollies lift the car?
No. The featured fixed platform set has no integrated lifting mechanism. A suitable separate lifting arrangement is required. Hydraulic self-loading models are a different type of equipment.
Are four dollies always necessary?
The required quantity depends on the vehicle, equipment and permitted movement. The featured product is supplied as four individual dollies. Do not assume that using only two allows the same movement or total load as using an approved four-dolly arrangement.
Can wheel dollies be used on a sloping driveway?
Not the featured set. Its instructions call for a hard, smooth and level floor. A driveway that looks almost flat may still have a drainage slope.
Does a 1,820kg set fit every car below that weight?
No. Each wheel must remain within the 455kg individual dolly rating, and tyre fit, loading clearance and floor requirements must also be satisfied.
